The Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has outlined England's new summer travel rules with the introduction of a three-tier traffic light system and an imminent return to international travel on 17th May 2021, which is set to be reviewed on a three-weekly basis.
The traffic light tier system consists of green, amber and red with rules that apply on return to the UK. Travellers need to check the FCDO website for travel advice applicable to their destination.
Green - No quarantine is required on return to the UK for countries on the green list. Travellers must have a COVID test before returning home, and a second test within the first two days of returning to the UK.
Amber – No leisure travel. You will be required to take a private COVID test before returning to England and a second test within the first two days you are home. You will be required to self-isolate in your home for 10 days subject to the test to release scheme on day 5.
Red - No leisure travel. You are required to take a COVID test before returning to England and a second test within the first two days you are home. All travellers will be required to quarantine in a hotel at their own expense upon return.
The traffic light system will be under constant review based upon the latest COVID risk assessment of each individual country. Whilst countries may be added to the green list, you should check the latest FCDO travel advice for entry requirements before purchasing insurance or travelling.
What about UK travel?
As of 10th May 2021, staycations and travel within the UK is permitted. However, rules surrounding accommodation and group numbers may still apply. Travellers should check the latest FCDO travel advice for more information.
All information detailed within is applicable as of 10th May 2021. Government travel advice is under constant review so all travellers should check the latest from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office before purchasing insurance or travelling.
