The impact of a large carbon footprint remains a concern for frequent flyers. There are already signs that we need to act now to preserve our mountains for future generations. In fact, it is now becoming increasingly popular to take an eco-friendly break such as a winter sports holiday. In a research project conducted by one of Europe’s highly regarded sustainability firms, Best Foot Forward, findings revealed that a one-way journey by air from London to Val Thorens in the French Alps, produces 82kg CO2 per passenger. Whilst an equivalent journey made by rail produces only 14kg CO2 per passenger.
In July, Eurostar released a winter schedule for the Alps ‘ski train’. They will be running services from late December to the beginning of April, with routes from London St Pancras and Ashford International to popular ski resorts including Val Thorens, Val d'Isère, Courchevel, Tignes, Meribel and Les Menuires, with a shorter coach transfer from station to resort.
